How to teach in Sweden, interest and knowledge, part 1

Interest and knowledge

As a teacher you must have a strong interest in people. You have to believe that it is possible to change people and you must see the good in everyone. You should not assume that the students are interested in your subjects. It doesn’t matter how interesting you find them. On the other hand, your interest in the subject can be a key to arouse interest among the students. You can find keys to curiosity by thinking why you got interested in the subjects from the beginning. Is often possible to spread the interest by showing how passionate you are.

Remember that subject knowledge is not always the most important. Time for a cliche:

  • Talented scientists built the first atomic bomb and
  • gifted doctors who performed inhuman experiments on humans in Germany during World War 2.

Knowledge is not just pure facts.  Democratic values are essential. You have to bring moral and ethics into the classroom, wether you like it or not.
